Years end

Living in the north brings many ends of years like this one. It is well below zero on both the Fahrenheit and Centigrade scales. A look at my window shows strange shapes covered by snow, and I have to think of what they might be. The sky has even less definition than the broad expanses of snow. It is a light gray tending almost to an off-white. All this is nature’s analogy to one’s life. Looking back, I see the strange shapes of memories past, and I have to think of what they might have been. Overall, life has been like the winter sky and neither dark and gloomy or bright and sunny. For me it is the off-white of a life that is neither dark or  sunny, but one best observed by looking back from the comfort of my chair. Warm in the comfort of a life lived without brooding regret.

Remembered Christmas

My thoughts at this time a year go back to a remembered time in 1964. I was in Vietnam and had left the field and was going home, but there were no more flights out for the States until after Christmas. It was Christmas Eve afternoon, and we were gathering for the Bob Hope Christmas show in Saigon. They called a group of us and told us a flight crew from one of the airlines was willing to make a flight out on Christmas Eve. We left Vietnam at 9:30 Christmas Eve evening. Crossing the international dateline we arrived at San Francisco on Christmas Eve at almost midnight. I was home on the East Coast where I lived then on Christmas afternoon. This remains one of my most memorable Christmas memories. I want to wish all of you the best of holidays and great, glorious, and bright future.

First post

When I told a friend I was just finishing up writing a new fantasy novel, she suggested I start a blog. I had tried blogging very unsuccessfully before and told her so. She suggested I should try using some video showing what I was doing. I somehow could not imagine a video of me sitting in front of the computer writing. The most interesting thing would probably be when I stopped to think and the screensaver came on, and you could watch SETI search for intelligent life in the universe. Without the screensaver, you might think there is no intelligent life in this blog.

That is the preface of the start of this new attempt at blogging. I started it by researching the software available for blogging and settled on this one provided by the people at Google. My feeling was if anyone knows how to do the Internet, it is Google. It is going to take me a while to come up with a look for this blog, so be patient as I try out new things.

The last thing for this first post is that I am a writer. I have to prioritize all the writing I do.  From a writing career perspective, the top of the list has to be the creation of new fiction. I am not yet sure where blogging comes in on the list. My guess it will be the interest you express in this blog that determines where it is on my list. My next post will be about what is going on currently in my writing life and its future direction.
